Our fifteen
tube mills are able to form, weld, size and cut steel tubing
of any shape to length in one continuous process. Flat steel
strips are passed through consecutive matching rolls with
contoured grooves, which gradually form the cold steel into
a tubular shape.
The butted
edges of this steel tube are then welded along the entire
tube length by a highly-refined welding process. This welding
procedure is critically controlled to assure consistent, uniform
quality and ultimate weld integrity.
Next
the flash created in welding is removed from the outside diameter
of the tube with a cutting tool that is contoured to the diameter
of the tube being formed. When customer specifications require,
Hofmann also has the capability to flash-roll the inside diameter
to smooth the inside tube surface.
Following
flash removal, the welded tubing, which is always produced
slightly oversized, is rolled to acceptable OD tolerance in
the final sizing operation.
When
producing tube shapes other than round, one more forming step
is employed. The finished round tube is reshaped through a
series of Turkshead rolls to form square, rectangular or oval
tubes.
In the
last stage of the continuous tube mill, the finished tubing
is automatically measured and cut to desired length.
